Cases
What these accounts looked like.
Each one is a real account reduced to its figures and anonymised by industry. They record what was found and what happened, not what anyone else should expect. Every account is different, and nothing here is a projection.
Agriculture and Farm Labor
The cost rose for a third straight year while the crew got smaller.
- The account
- A Salinas Valley grower with roughly $2.4M of annual payroll across field and equipment classes, an experience modification of 1.41, and two open indemnity claims from the prior rating period.
- What the broker found
- Two claims still inside the rating period were carrying reserves well above what the closed medical showed. Field payroll had also been reported under a single class code that did not separate equipment operators.
- What was done
- Requested corrected loss runs, took the reserve question to the carrier, and reported payroll by actual class at renewal.
- Outcome
- The experience modification was recalculated for the following term. The grower stayed with the same carrier.
Construction
An audit came back with a bill the owner had not budgeted for.
- The account
- A framing contractor with roughly $1.8M of payroll, an audit that reclassified a portion of subcontracted labour as direct payroll, and no certificates on file for two of the subcontractors.
- What the broker found
- The reclassification was correct for the two subcontractors without certificates, and incorrect for a third who did hold coverage for the period in question.
- What was done
- Produced the third subcontractor’s certificate and requested an audit revision on that portion only.
- Outcome
- The audit was revised for the portion supported by the certificate. The rest of the bill stood, and the owner was told so plainly rather than led on.
Trucking and Logistics
Non-renewed, and two brokers had already declined to quote the account.
- The account
- A regional carrier running eleven power units, an experience modification above 1.6, and a fatality claim four years old but still inside the rating period.
- What the broker found
- The class code in use did not match the actual radius of operation, which had narrowed considerably since the policy was written.
- What was done
- Rebuilt the submission around the current operation, documented the safety programme put in place after the claim, and took it to a surplus lines market rather than the standard market that had declined it.
- Outcome
- The account was placed for the following term. The experience modification was unchanged; what changed was which market saw an accurate submission.
